What I'm Reading

I am currently reading the book "Night Bird Calling" by Cathy Gohlke.

What it's About

Set in 1941, Lilliana flees from her abusive husband the night of her mother's funeral and goes to her Aunt Hyacinth's home - the only place she knows to go, and to keep a promise she gave to her mother.

While she's there she gets to know her aunt, the local preacher, the lady who cooks and cleans for her aunt, her children and some of the locals, many who become friends.

But it's not all good. Her husband isn't the kind to give up and the locals don't like some of the things she's been doing and the more the pot stirs the more trouble comes.

My Opinion

Quick disclaimer: I'm only half way through the book.

I wanted to get that out there because I don't know what happens the last 200 pages, but if they're as good as the first, this will be on my highly recommended list.

Some of the things I love about this book:

  • The way the author writes.

  • I feel like I am right there with the characters.

  • I love historic fiction.

  • The characters themselves. Some you love, some you want to punch in the gut.

  • I want to keep reading it.

I'll be back when I'm done reading it. Until then...
