5 Inexpensive Ways to Decorate for Fall

Tomorrow is the first day of my favorite month of the year - October!

For me, being surrounded by all the warm colors of fall, having memories of jumping in piles of leaves, the sound of leaves crunching under my feet, and the smell of a fireplace burning brings comfort.

These moments of comfort don't have to be left to the outdoors. The same coziness can be felt in your home by making a few tweaks that cost little to nothing.

Ambiance.

The sense of smell is very powerful and there are several inexpensive ways to get the smell of fall throughout your home.

One place to start is on your stove. A couple of cut up apples, orange slices and some twigs of cinnamon are all you need. Throw them in a pot with a good amount of water, let it boil then simmer. For a bit of added spice, use your spices. Just add a dash to your water and enjoy.

Candles and wax burners are another great way to fill the air with the smell of pumpkin or spicy coffee or whatever flavor soothes you.

If the weather permits (and maybe someone nearby has a fireplace going) crack the window and let the natural outdoor aromas in.

Blankets

Blankets are not only a great way to keep you warm while you're outside looking at the stars, curled up on the couch reading a book or sipping hot chocolate by the fire, they also make great home accessories.

Drape one over the arm of your couch or the back of a chair, across your bed or stacked in a basket. Mix up the colors for added appeal.

If you don't want to purchase one or you want something more sentimental - learn how to knit or crochet and make your own! There are a ton of videos and step by step instructions out there. Who knows, you may find a hobby you love.

Pillows

The feel of any room can change just by swapping out throw pillows. This is my go to when I want to change my décor with the seasons. Orange ones go on my couch in the autumn months, then they're switched out to red for Christmas/winter, pastels and white for spring and summer.

And for a little extra ump, get different textured pillows and mix them together.

To save space and money, order slip covers for your pillows. They're easy to clean and store.

Flowers

Lately I've noticed grocery stores have really stepped it up when it comes to creating affordable bouquets. But if you don't want to pay for a bundle of flowers, one bloom in a vase serves the purpose.

Well made fake flowers can last for a long time. They may be a little expensive at first but they'll give you your money's worth for years to come.

But if spending money isn't something you want to do, go for a walk and gather leaves, berries and pine cones, grab a wooden bowl and create your own arrangement.

Artwork

Whether you paint the work of art yourself, have your kids create a gallery wall of fall art, purchase it, or blow up a photograph, switching out your artwork will make a big impact.

And if you're someone who doesn't think they can paint or draw, don't worry. There are plenty of free templates, instruction videos, paint by numbers, and adult coloring books that make it so you CAN create works of art.

A few adjustments here and there and your home will feel and smell like fall no matter what the temperature is outside.
