5 Fun Ways to Celebrate the 4th of July

Night time fireworks at city parks, a picnic and swimming at the beach, backyard BBQ’s with family and friends – this is a typical 4th of July celebration. This is not a typical year. With Coronavirus still spreading, things may look a little different this Independence Day.

But just because social distancing and masks are still in practice, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a great time celebrating and here are five ways to do just that.

1. Keep the fun going all day with a backyard filled with games. Have a little friendly competition playing croquet, Cornhole, or tag football. Strategically placed cups and ping pong balls will work for a game of mini golf. You don’t even need props to have fun – just a “home base” and some hiding places for a game of tag and hide and seek.

2. Write out a big "Happy 4th of July" and draw flags, top hats, fireworks, stick figures holding sparklers . . . let your hands get nice and chalky.

3. When you need an air conditioner break grab the family and bake some cookies. When they are nice and hot, decorate them with some sprinkles or confetti then let them cool. Once they’re completely done, put a handful in little bags and tie them with red, white, and blue ribbon then hand them out to your neighbors.

4. You don’t have to wait until Halloween to dress up. Put on a tutu, glitter, scrunchies, face paint, Uncle Sam top hat, and whatever else you can think of and see who comes up with the best Independence Day outfit.

5. Make a banner to hang in your window or on your fence. Cut pyramids out of paper or fabric and adhere them to a string. Or cut construction paper into strips and chain them together, securing with tape. Grab some yarn and make a banner of tassels. You could even string plastic beads together. Let your imagination run free.

Bonus: If we have to wear masks, we might as well make them a little more fun. Stick on some gems, glitter, fabric paint, or whatever else you can find and decorate your mask for the 4th of July Celebrations – and a memorable photo.

Most of all, have fun!
