30 Day Painting Challenge: Experimenting with Different Mediums

My studio is filled with so many wonderful artist tools, including a bevy of art mediums. This week I worked with Watercolors, Acrylic, Ink, Pastels, Gouache, and Markers and Color Pencils.

It was a lot of fun working with so many different mediums. I found out which ones worked best for me and which ones I won't be using again any time soon.

I have a great time painting homes, mostly in watercolor, and I thought this little happy house needed a little happy couple. I really like how the tree turned out. It looks textured.

I used to be afraid to use watercolors because I always heard they were difficult to control, but I've become very comfortable using them. It does take a little practice gauging the amount of water and the different ways to paint with them, but there are a lot of really good videos and books out there to help.

Kerr's molasse candies were first made in 1895! Have you eaten one before? If not, try one this Halloween. They're different than the every day candy you find on the convenience store shelves.

I used Gouache for this painting. Gouache is similar to watercolor in that it is water activated. The pigmentation is wonderful and it takes fewer layers than watercolors to get a rich color. This is a material I will definitely use again.

I can't do a series using all my materials in my studio without including acrylic paint. It's one of my favorite mediums. It's so fun and satisfyingly to blend colors. And if you water it down a little it acts like a watercolor paint.

As much as I struggled with flowers last week, I have to say the flowers on her dress turned out pretty good! I used a base of marker and added shadow with color pencils. I like to combine the two because when I use them separately my art looks like I'm still in elementary school. But together, it looks much better. Plus, I like how deep and rich the pencil looks when it is placed on top of the marker.

These materials are fun and I will use them again in art journals and coloring books, but not for my day to day art.

I have never used bottled ink in my art before. I have several jars of this glorious liquid in a multitude of colors. They have been sitting in my studio for years begging me to use them and I finally have.

A little goes a long way and the color is so rich. The only thing I am not a fan of is it's not forgiving. If you mess up and don't figure out a way to cover it up, it's staying. Regardless, I'm using this material again!

I've used pastels in the past, but they're not a regular on my list. This was done with pan pastels. I want to use this medium more. I have seen some amazing artwork come from using pastels, however it's going to take practice so it may be awhile before it shows up in my art series.

I really like how the pastels made the faux fur on the dress look so soft and plush. It's almost like I can feel it just by looking at it.

What I Learned This Week

  • I still love watercolors and am excited to add gouache to the palette

  • Acrylics are my go-to

  • I'm not a big fan of marker and color pencil, but I'll use them on occasion

  • I'm excited by how much I enjoy using ink

  • I enjoy pastels but I need a lot of practice

  • It's good to change things up and try new things - I need to do this more often

  • I need to practice taking better photos of my art

  • Relax. Slow down. Enjoy the process. This isn't a race

Have a great week!

Rebecca ~
